Are The Mets In Trouble?

It’s still really early, but are the defending NL Champs don’t look so hot right now. Injuries have ravaged the team, knocking David Wright, Lucas Duda, and others out. The pitching has been decent, but inconsistent. So can they get their act together and regain control of their division?

Let’s look at the things they have going for them first. Their staff is still loaded with young, talented pitchers. Not only that but Zack Wheeler is a potential reinforcement who is nearing his return. Matt Harvey has looked much improved after a dismal start. Jeurys Familia, despite some shaky outings, is still perfect in save chances. The return of Jose Reyes may also help spark the team’s lineup.

Unfortunately, I think that what’s behind door number two is pretty troubling for the Mets. Steven Matz was diagnosed with a bone spur in his elbow, and could miss a decent chunk of time if he elects to undergo surgery. Then there’s Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom who seem to be feeling the effects of last year’s playoff push. Thor is still throwing hard, but has experienced some discomfort in his elbow. Then the deGrominator has been struggling to match his velocity from last year. Even Harvey, in spite of his improvement, still hasn’t been as dominant as he is capable of being.

To make matters worse, the Mets aren’t hitting. They rank 28th in the league in runs scored and 29th in batting average. Yoenis Cespedes can’t do it alone, and the Mets are doing anything they can to shake up the offense. This includes taking a flier on a diminished Reyes, and sending Michael Conforto down to the minors to get some more seasoning.

Just to be clear, I’m not ruling anything out. Last year, the Mets didn’t look great before Cespedes came to town. I think they still have all the pieces necessary to make a deep playoff run. However, they’re going to need to get some consistency out of their regulars and hope the rest of the team can gel. So the verdict is that the Mets are in trouble, but it wouldn’t take much for them to turn things around either.
