BELLATOR WILL CROWN A NEW KING

May 2016 Bellator stripped their heavyweight champion VITALY MINAKOV of the belt for failing to defend. Since then they have not put it around another ones waist. President SCOTT COKER has always been non-committal about naming another champion. That is finally about to change. With parent company Viacom recently opening up their pocketbooks and diving deep into it there’s no better time than now. The promotional build up should get them a few shekels.

The company has just announced that throughout 2018 they will have a 8 man tournament they are calling THE BELLATOR MMA WORLD GRAND PRIX 2018. Personally something like “King of the Mountain Tourney” might roll off the tongue a little easier; but such is life in advertising. The eight combatants are: heavyweights: FRANK MIRMATT MITRIONEROY NELSON, and FEDOR EMELIANENKO. The other 4 are light heavyweights making the move up. They’re: CHAEL SONNENRAMPAGE JACKSONKING MO, and light heavyweight champ RYAN BADER. Scott didn’t say what the company would do should “Darth” win the tourney and be crowned heavyweight champ. The tournament will take place throughout 2018 and the title fight finale will take place December 2018. Allowing light heavyweights to move up is an interesting tact. Sure any of the 8 could be the next champ but the heavyweights do have some advantages. However there are some very interesting match up possibilities with the draw set to take place in the near future. Shockingly missing from the tourney  are 27-10-2 (12 wins via KO/TKO) 5 fight winning streak fan favorite CHEICK KONGO, as well as 6 fight winning streak 13-2 (6 wins via KO/TKO) JUSTIN WREN. “The Big Pygmy” has a great backstory about how he’s helping the pygmy tribes in the rain forests. Also not in the tourney is former champ 20-0 Minakov who’s been fighting in FIGHT NIGHTS GLOBAL from Russia recently.
