There was a day not too long ago when it was hoped that FRANCIS NGANNOU would fight DEREK LEWIS. Lewis used to joke with the media about it saying “people just like watching black on black crime”; in the sense both like to end fights with vicious knockouts. Derek’s continued spine and back issues slowed him; while the UFC started giving Francis a huge push. That push has become a feverish pitch. The second his fist touch ALISTAIR OVEREEM’s chin it sent his meteoric rise to title challenger. Him and champion STIPE MIOCIC headline UFC 220 in president DANA WHITE’s city of Boston Mass. on Saturday January 20th. A second title fight between DANIEL CORMIER and VOLKAN OEZDEMIR are the co-main. There’s some really great fights on the card like USMAN-MEEK, and BURGOS-KATTAR. But all eyes will be on the top of the card. While Stipe is the “everyman”; it’s hard to deny the companies backing of Francis. Case in point: the commercials, ads, and promo spots he’s done during his rise. Even a loaf of bread takes time, is this still a tad too soon for him? We shall see in two weeks. There’s a question of what else we will see.

The fight is arguably one of the best matchups in UFC heavyweight history. Everyone across the MMA world is excited to see it. But Stipe isn’t the only challenger for Ngannou that night. For some ungodly reason the people in BELLATOR’s and PARAMOUNT’s (rebranded of formerly Spike TV) programming and marketing departments thought it was a good idea to use this day to put on a card as well. Take nothing away from Bellator 192, it’s an important card for them. It’s co-mained by the 1st fight in their heavyweight tournament between CHAEL SONNEN and RAMPAGE JACKSON. That leads into a very highly anticipated title fight between 2 other former UFC fighters; DOUGLAS LIMA and RORY MACDONALD. With Khonry Gracie making his pro debut and young stud Aaron Pico making his 3rd appearance it should be a fun card. But who’s gonna see it? Bellator has taken a hit for letting color guy JIMMY SMITH go. Booking against a big UFC PPV, is a move that will cost them a lot of eyes; which means lots of commercial dollars. Now the two companies do share nights as often as Hailey’s Comet shows up. Smartly Bellator is on the other side of the country at least; being in The Forum in Inglewood, CA. The only way this blunder could have been worse was if Bellator booked this card say in NY or Connecticut with the UFC being in Boston.

Chael has said he wants to badly beat his former employers in the ratings. While Dana White hasn’t openly said he’s rooting for Ngannou; you can bet he’d like to see a double knockout. In that heavyweight fight, and in the ratings.
