Daily DFS Picks and the NCAA Tourney – 3/14/16

This was an exhausting weekend of sports ending with the NCAA bracket being announced. There were no monster hits on GPP’s, but there were some really great finishes.

The NASCAR race ended with an amazing battle between Edwards and the winner Harvick. Harvick compiled 135.75 points in DFS and led my main team to 230.75 points. Keselowski’s 6.5 points and Menard putting up a -16 gave this team no chance to win. What I love about DFS is that of the 21 teams I played, only one cashed. That one team though finished very high with 398.5 points and made up for the others. This team was led by Harvick, Earnhardt Jr. and Edwards. Allmendinger, Larson, and Ragan also had good days with 85.5 points combined.

The PGA event in Tampa also came down to the wire as Schwartzel took down Haas on the first playoff hole. Schwartzel’s 67 in the final round was enough to make up 5 shots and take down the crown. He was my #2 player in percentage which helped me to 11 cashes on the week.

My main team battled but came up short with 292.5 points. It took about 312 to cash. Scoring was very tough Sunday and there were no Mid 60 rounds to grab. Oosthuizen did manage a top 10. My top scoring team was 367 with Schwartzel, Choi, DeLaet, Lee, Na, and Noh.

Willet $10,800 (20.9% owned) 70-72-71-72 (+1) (Tied for 22rd place) 61.5 points

Oosthuizen $10,600 (5.1% owned) 72-70-70-70 (-2) (Tied for 8th place) 68 points

Grace $9,500 (5.6% owned) 72-72-70-73 (+3) (Tied for 37th place) 43.5 points

Knost $6,700 (7.3% owned) 73-75 (+6) (MISSED CUT) 20.5 points

Summerhays $6,600 (5.8% owned) 71-73-69-72 (+1) (Tied for 22rd place) 54 points

Hubbard $5,700 (9.3% owned) 71-73-75-73 (+8) (Tied for 64th place) 43 points

My NBA team was adjusted a bit as Porzingis sat due to an illness. Antetokounmpo went off for 77.75, but poor days from Russell, Monroe, and Bayless left us short of a cash at 278.

I will again only fire one lineup tonight and hope to take down the GPP’s with it. There is a good 9 game slate.   Golden State has a great matchup, but the 15 point spread will scare many away. OKC and Phoenix should be in high scoring games, and Detroit/Washington could get interesting.

I decided to fade all the top players and put a solid team together that could all get 40+. McCallum will be the key at the min price.

PG – Walker $8,700

SG – Wiggins $6,200

SF – Deng $6,200

PF – Williams $5,600

C – Howard $7,800

G – Rubio $6,200

F – Harris $6,300

Util – McCallum $3,000

The amazing streak of losing goalies continued, but Mrazek played very well. My theory of Detroit as the play of the day also fell short as they were shutout. A pile of shots allowed me to compile 22.2 points, but with the trio of Stamkos, Bishop, and Crosby going off the cash number was well over 30.

I am again playing only the one lineup and will ride with Gibson as my goalie against New Jersey on the 6 game slate. I am going to stack Nashville, Anaheim, and St. Louis tonight.

C – Rakell $4,700

C – Lehtera $3,800

W – Perry $6,200

W – Schwartz $5,600

W – McGinn $3,900

D – Josi $7,000

D – Hutton $4,000

G – Gibson $7,600

Util – Forsberg $6,600

The NCAA brackets came out and the controversy continued with majors being chosen over the smaller teams like Monmouth. I would have left out Syracuse and to let Monmouth in. While I think there is parity in the NCAA, it is hard for me to see anyone below a 3 seed winning it all. I loved seeing Michigan get in and I think they will handle Tulsa, but ND will be too tough. As I write this, I already have 13 brackets filled out, but I am just trying to hit all combinations with the top teams.

Michigan State will win it all beating Kansas in the final. I have North Carolina and Texas A&M in the final four. I have Duke, Iowa St. Miami, and Xavier as the other elite 8 teams. I think Virginia is the weakest #1 seed and Kansas has the most difficult bracket to get thru. I took Michigan State at the beginning of the year to win it all and there is no reason to jump off the bandwagon now. As a Michigan fan, this pains me, but I think Izzo gets his second championship, finally quieting any critics on his status in the all-time coaching ranks.

Below is my ranking of teams I think could win it all if they get hot and have the breaks go their way.

  1. Michigan St
  2. Kansas
  3. North Carolina
  4. Miami
  5. Texas A&M
  6. West Virginia
  7. Oregon
  8. Xavier
  9. Villanova
  10. Oklahoma

Upsets are very difficult to predict and I do not usually go too crazy in picking too many of them in my brackets. A few that intrigue me include South Dakota St. Hawaii, Butler, and Chattanooga. The next 3 weeks will be great as usual!
