The Detroit Pistons’ hiring of former Memphis Grizzlies executive Ed Stefanski as a senior basketball adviser is an important first step towards bringing the Detroit Pistons back to respectability after an unusual 2018-18 NBA season that was spent without a playoff appearance. Stefanski will be charged with developing a strong front office including hiring a general manager and other Pistons front office personnel. Stefanski’s most important hires will be to find a general manager and head coach that can work together to build a team to compete in an improving Eastern Conference. However, he should probably try to hire the arguably the best head coach on the market, Dwane Casey.

The Toronto Raptors had a successful 2017-18 season by most accounts. Although they were led by one of the NBA’s best backcourts that included DeMar Derozan and Kyle Lowry, it was impressive that they earned the best record in the Eastern Conference. Prior to the start of the 2017-18 season, there were some outlets that didn’t have the Toronto Raptors winning even 50 games this season and they nearly won 60 games! The lasting memory of this season for the Toronto Raptors was losing in embarrassing fashion to LeBron James and the Cavaliers in the NBA playoffs again but the Raptors are far from the only Eastern Conference team to have extreme difficulty solving the LeBron James puzzle.

It was expected that the 2017-18 Detroit Pistons would earn a playoff spot as a potential 6,7, or 8 seed. Their season went in a very unusual way as they started well, were hit by injuries to their starting point guard Reggie Jackson, sustained another injury to an underrated Jon Leuer, and pulled off a big trade for former Clippers All-Star Blake Griffin in which the Pistons had to give up two starters for Griffin. It wasn’t too surprising that the Pistons finished 9th in the Eastern Conference given the numerous instability and with some health luck and a quality coach like Dwane Casey, things could change.

Having Dwane Casey to coach a team with a core of Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond, and Reggie Jackson is smart because he clearly knows how to get production out of young veterans as he showed with DeRozan, Lowry, and Serge Ibaka in Toronto. It was also promising that some of the young Raptors like Delon Wright and Pascal Siakam developed into rotation players under Casey. Fred VanVleet has become an award candidate under Casey. Raptors rookie OG Anunoby had his moments and is comparable in style to former Pistons first round pick Stanley Johnson, who has been a disappointment thus far. Dwane Casey would be a good choice for winning now and the near future for the Detroit Pistons.
