Five Hottest NASCAR Drivers After Michigan

One of the most shocking finishes in Michigan’s history is now in the books as the last few laps before the final caution left us wondering. No matter who finished the race first, the playoff structure would have changed dramatically. With the dramatic change however comes the tightening of the playoff race with three remaining, because after Bristol if we have another repeat winner it will be all over. Here are the five hottest NASCAR drivers after the Pure Michigan 400.

  1. Martin Truex Jr: Although his fifth seasonal win slipped out of his hands at the last moment, the regular season title is pretty much all wrapped up barring some kind of sudden meltdown. Five top fives in the last six including two wins truly makes him THE hottest driver in the Monster Energy series. Need we already still hand him the championship long before Homestead?
  2. Kyle Busch: Six consecutive top ten starts with four of those from the pole and catapulting him to a win at Pocono which put an end to his winless misery. In any case, Joe Gibbs Racing has now raised to another level with Kyle’s and Denny Hamlin’s wins breaking the ice so to speak. Already winning the Camping World Truck race last night at Bristol, Kyle is beginning to gear up for another weekend sweep.
  3. Erik Jones: One of the few hometown drivers who wanted so bad to win at his home track, but the best he could do was a third place finish which is his seasonal best. What is really the best thing going is having the longest streak of top ten finishes, three to be exact. With only 130 points from the cutoff line, a win at Bristol is hopeful.
  4. Kyle Larson: The divebomb pass in overtime is what he needed to put him out of his slump and earn him his third straight win at Michigan. His third win of the season puts him back up to second in points, though it is only 129 points. Winning the pole and finishing sixth at Bristol earlier could be a huge momentum builder after his Michigan win.
  5. Chase Elliott: His consecutive run of runner-up finishes may have come to an end at Michigan, but he still managed another top ten (eighth), his second in three races. Elliott may be the best thing going for Hendrick at the moment even if it is outside the top ten. He is the first driver in the playoffs without a win and a much stronger finish at Bristol is needed.

News and notes: Joe Gibbs Racing has transferred management duties of the 77 and 78 crew over to Furniture Row Racing, but the crew members will still train at JGR headquarters. The management decision was made when JGR suspended two of Truex’s crew members after an altercation with Adam Stevens at Indianapolis.

Denny Hamlin and his girlfriend Jordan Fish annouced the birth of their second child. A baby girl who they named Molly Gold Hamlin, and also have a four year old daughter Taylor.
