KELVIN GASTELUM insisted with a win at UFC 224 he deserves a title shot vs the WHITTAKER – ROMERO fight. He got his win vs JACARE SOUZA; and has a good argument for that claim. Jacare kept trying for a takedown; eventually getting it. From mount he landed elbows then attempted an armbar. Souza slowed a tad and Kelvin came forward opening cuts on the left side of Jacare’s face. When Jacare did land, nothing seemed to hurt Gastelum. Kelvin then dropped Jacare with a combo. He managed to return fire with very little effect. Gastelum was also stuffing the takedown attempts now. It was in the air who’d get the judges nod; but it was Kelvin by split decision.

After a heated, difficult week between MACKENZIE DERN and AMANDA COOPER; their fight went off at a catchweight. Mackenzie threw a couple of lefts that Amanda answered weakly. Dern then threw an overhand right that partially landed. Cooper countered with a leg kick and Mackenzie answers with a right that drops Amanda down. Dern jumped on her in mount landing GNP. Cooper gave up her back as Dern locked in a RNC for the win at 2:27 of round 1. JOHN LINEKER and BRIAN KELLEHER were okay with throwing hands early. John’s strength and power was the big difference, doing more damage to Brian than vice versa. A brutal left hand dropped Brian at 3:43 into the 3rd round for the KO. Two legendary Brazilians started the UFC 224 ppv. LYOTO MACHIDA and the retiring   VITOR BELFORT. Both were extremely careful to start not wanting to make any costly mistakes. Lyoto used his kicks to keep Vitor away, and that continued throughout. 1 minute into round 2 Machida landed a left front kick to Belfort’s face dropping him to the canvas for the final time in his career. Lyoto then called out MICHAEL BISPING; looking to retire him next.

CEZAR FERREIRA gave KARL ROBERSON the 1st loss of his career via triangle submission with 15 seconds left in round 1. ALEKSEI OLEINIK picked up his 44th career submission win. It came via an ezekiel choke for the 12th time. This one, was at 1:45 of round 1 vs JUNIOR ALBININICK HEIN had his 3 fight winning streak stopped as he tapped to a RNC 4:15 into round 1 vs DAVI RAMOSSEAN STRICKLAND was KO’d 3:12 into the fight by a right spinning heel kick from ELIZEU DOS SANTOSWARLLEY ALVES won via TKO as the cageside doctor stopped the fight in between rounds 2 and 3 vs SULTAN ALIEV. It was due to his right eye being swollen shut and most likely being an orbital fracture. JACK HERMANSSON TKO’d THALES LEITES 2:10 into round 3. ALBERTO MINA dropped a unanimous decision to RAMAZAN EMEEVMARKUS PEREZ got JAMES BOCHNOVIC to tap to a RNC 4:28 into the first round.
