HOLLOWAY OFF UFC 226 AND ITS REPERCUSSIONS

Breaking news as fireworks celebrations for July 4th dwindled down were not good for the UFCMAX “BLESSED” HOLLOWAY has been taken off of this Saturday’s co-main event at UFC 226. It continues an international fight week curse that rivals being on the cover of SI or the John Madden video game.

Max has always been looked at as a “large featherweight”. He’s riding a 12 fight win streak; including back-to-back 3rd round TKO’s over former featherweight king JOSE ALDO. However the last time Max foug…. well almost fought; the NYSAC stopped him from continuing a weight cut to fight KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV. Before that; the 26 year old Hawaiian was scratched of UFC 222 with an injury. More recently it’s come up about him moving to 155. As a matter of fact he was peppered with questions about it after his open workout session. He did a spot on FOX and even Michael Bisping questioned how he was looking. When he got back to his hotel room according to reports he crashed and teammates had problems waking him up. When he awoke he was having flashes and slurred speech which prompted the team to bring him immediately back to the ER. He was there on Monday night as well for concussion like symptoms and released Tuesday morning. This time doctors pulled him off the card. So in theory this isn’t even a weight cut gone bad.

What happens now? There is a couple of ways to go. Before this even happened BRIAN ORTEGA had said even if Max can’t make weight he wants to fight him. That’s fighter talk. Agent/manager/lawyer talk is far different; they speak in dollars and titles. Rener Gracie; Brian’s coach did say “if it’s not a title shot; we’re probably not interested”. So would the company meet Ortega’s reps 1/2 way and turn a fight with him into an INTERIM TITLE? Essentially it’s 48 hours out of fight time; so who’s available and can jump in? 1- No one from bantamweight can come up and 2- no one from lightweight can come down  (including a certain Irishman). 3- The company needs Jose Aldo vs Jeremy Stephens to remain the main event in Calgary. “T-CITY’S” last 2 wins come against Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar so both of those are doubtful rematches. Josh Emmett is still under medical suspension. It leaves MIRSAD BEKTIC an extremely high long shot but the highest ranked available opponent. 4- The fight will MOST LIKELY be rescheduled. The earliest being 227 at the STAPLES CENTER August 4th to the worst case scenario all the way back to November 3rd when the UFC returns to MSG. In the calendar year of 2018; 17 times now a co-main or main event has fallen off.

This shouldn’t even be needed to say; however; many fans have come out with immediate anger. What’s most important isn’t another card being messed up. It’s the long lasting health of a young man with a bright future. God willing this WILL NOT BE a much deeper physical issue like early warning signs of something like a stroke, CTE, MS, or ALS. God forbid he be the 1st true case of CTE in MMA it won’t fully be known till after death as there’s no true test for it. Confirmation only comes at an autopsy where the brain is cut into.
