John Franklin III Transferring To FAU From Auburn

Just a couple of days after Jarrett Stidham was named starting quarterback for Auburn over Sean White, Gus Malzahn will now be technically one short when the season begins. If things were to go wrong once again with either White or Stidham, he would have to rely on those who haven’t hit the field yet as John Franklin III announced his intention to transfer to Florida Atlantic to hopefully have playing time under new head coach Lane Kiffin. As a graduate transfer, he would be available immediately.

While White and Jeremy Johnson struggled once again last season, Franklin was hopeful to showcase his talent as a dual-threat QB, bringing back what was lost when Nick Marshall left. Franklin showcased his legs more than his arm as he was third on the team in rushing, running for 450 and two touchdowns. For the majority of the season, it was White who got more snaps as his passing and QB rating improved, even their season record improved to 8-5 before breaking his arm losing the Sugar Bowl.

With Stidham coming on board, Franklin made to move to wide receiver hoping for more playing time and possibly serve as a emergency backup if either players didn’t produce. With Tony Stevens graduated, Ryan Davis and Eli Stove were most likely to move up as the top receivers and other offensive weapons were still left over from last season. That left very little chance for Franklin to ever see the field, whether as a quartback or a wide receiver to produce.

As far as FAU is concerned, Franklin is not the only recent addition to Kiffin’s newly aquired team. The new head coach added one more QB from Oklahoma, Chris Robison who transferred after being dismissed from the team for violating team rules. Robison however will have to sit out the entire season after already being enrolled at the start of 2017. For Franklin, this will be his last stop as this is his fourth school in four years. First Florida State, East Mississippi Community College and then Auburn.

Whether it be as a quarterback or wide receiver, it will remain to be seen if he finally gets the playing time he so desires. With sixteen wide receivers and six active quarterbacks, only time will tell.

Other SEC notes: Former LSU QB prospect Lindsey Scott will transfer to EMCC. Missouri DE Nate Howard was arrested for failing to appear in court over a speeding ticket. Howard was already suspended from the team since he was already facing a felony drug charge. Tennessee head coach Butch Jones handed walk-on TE Eli Wolf a full scholarship during their “Circle of Life” drills. Jones also announced that Freshman WR Jacquez Jones is out for the season with a knee injury.

Georgia Freshman RB D’Andre Swift missed practice to check out medical issues, but so far nothing critical. Head coach Kirby Smart also signed 4-star WR Elijah Moore to the 2018 class.
