Manny Machado Signs With Padres

Manny Machado has signed the largest contract in American sports history.

The San Diego Padres and Machado are in agreement on a 10 year, $300 million deal. There is an opt-out after Machado’s fifth season under contract.

Machado had been fielding offers all winter and no one really knew where he would end up. San Diego didn’t appear to be in the mix until recently when Jon Heyman reported it as an option.

Machado, 26, has been one of the game’s brightest stars even with his lack of hustle making headlines. A career .282 hitter, Machado exploded in 2018 between Baltimore and Los Angeles, as he hit .297 with 37 home runs and 107 RBI, his best year to date as a Major League player.

At the ripe age of 26, Machado hasn’t even hit his prime yet, so San Diego’s gamble here for 10 years is a logical one in an attempt to turn around their franchise.

Machado can always opt out after year five, making him a free agent once again at 31.

So much can change in five years.
