Mariners Continue Fire Sale, Trade Segura To Phils

The Seattle Mariners are truly gutting their team from top to bottom.

After trading James Paxton to the New York Yankees and shipping Robinson Cano with Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets the past few weeks, the Mariners have traded another All-Star talent in Jean Segura.

Segura has been traded to the Philadelphia Phillies for Carlos Santana and former top prospect J.P. Crawford.

Philly must be excited to part ways with Santana, who was blocking Rhys Hoskins from playing first base every day. Hoskins was playing the outfield more than the team wanted him to, putting his defensive liabilites on display due to Santana being at first. When the Phillies, signed Santana last offseason, it was a very surprising move by the club. However, being able to dump his contract and his body for somebody like Segura is a huge victory. Crawford, a one time top prospect, has been rather disappointing since making his Major League debut in 2017. Injuries have hampered him from getting any type of lengthy opportunity, but as long as he remains healthy, Seattle will be willing to give him a shot. He has a career .214 average in under 200 at-bats.

Segura in 2018 hit over .300 for the third year in a row and stole 20 bases for the fifth year in a row. A two-time All-Star and defensive stud, Segura has been one of the best pure shortstops in the game and will add a whole new dimension to a Phillies team that would go through stretches of being unable to put together runs. Segura’s ability to get on-base and produce run scoring opportunities will surely be able to help instantly for a team that saw great improvement from their 2017 season.

The National League East is slowly but surely turning into a mega power in baseball.
