Mets Promote Dominic Smith, Designate Salas For Assignment

The Dominic Smith era in Flushing has officially begun.

After being the New York Mets’ first round selection (11 overall) in the 2013 MLB draft, Dominic Smith will be making his Major League debut Friday night in Philadelphia.

Fernando Salas has been designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Smith.

The open spot on the bench and in the lineup became a reality when the Mets traded Lucas Duda to Tampa Bay at the end of July and they shipped Jay Bruce to Cleveland earlier this week.

With players such as Brandon Nimmo and Amed Rosario now able to get in the lineup, the Mets are looking to get younger and see what they have for next season.

It’s now time for Smith to man first base and see what he can provide the Mets.

There’s already a good nucleus of talent on that field. Michael Conforto and Yoenis Cespedes will be the big components for next season in the outfield. Otherwise, there are a lot of question marks for the team.

There’s a lot of time to make a splash and make a case for a 2018 starting/roster spot. Names such as Neil Walker, Asdrubal Cabrera and Jose Reyes are not likely to be in the 2018 mix meaning there is plenty of opportunity inside the Mets system to show their worth.

As for Dominic Smith, his steady development has Mets brass feeling confident he can be the necessary plug at first base.

Welcome to the show, kid.
