Mets Sign Jed Lowrie

The New York Mets seemingly had their infield locked in going into the 2019 season, but GM Brodie Van Wagenen had other ideas.

Jed Lowrie has agreed to a two year deal with the club for $20 million.

The number is very low for somebody who had the best year of his career in 2018. Lowrie at age 34 has gotten better with age, building on a great 2017 season. Many didn’t expect Lowrie to ever amount to the player the Boston Red Sox expected him to be over a decade ago.

Now, he has an opportunity to help bring a World Series title to Flushing as the ever so versatile switch hitting Lowrie will be deployed all over the infield in 2019. This will also give the Mets the opportunity to give Jeff McNeil some reps in the outfield and maybe provide an avenue to dump Todd Frazier or at least only play him against left handed pitching.

Some fans may be disappointed because Van Wagenen hasn’t added much in the pitching department besides minor league signings and bringing in Jeurys Familia and Edwin Diaz, but Brodie is adding depth. Depth is much needed especially when the Mets have been one of the most injury prone teams in all of baseball over the past decade. The Los Angeles Dodgers used the same approach the past few years. Acquire the best players you can if you have the opportunity and figure out where you can put them later on. Act now worry later.
