NICCO NEWEST UFC CHAMP

It’s usually expected in any tourney type situation that the 1 and 2 seeds will meet in the finale. That was never going to be the case in the TUF 26 finale; with the women’s flyweight belt as a prize. Due to a hospitalized SIJARA EUBANKS from a rough weight cut; the finale changed from 12 vs 14. The 14th ranked Nicco Montano was on short notice now taking on 1 seed Roxanne Modafferi. Roxanne was on season 18 and got dropped in a preliminary round.

“THE HAPPY WARRIOR” ROXANNE MODAFFERI came out fast and NICCO MONTANO was willing to exchange with her. Once down on the ground; Roxanne started to zero in on working an armbar but never had one truly locked in. With Nicco continuing to be pressed; Roxanne was able to get inside. Montano tried to stay back at striking range as they continued to exchange and counter well. After Roxanne got a takedown it was Nicco attempting a triangle choke and landing some GNP that took a lot out of the warrior. But the break between rounds seemed to help as Modafferi came out strong once again; although this time a bit slower. That split second loss of speed helped Nicco’s strikes land more and more as she bloodied the warriors nose. While the 2 continued to exchange into the “championship rounds”; Montano was getting the better of them. Roxanne showed the heart of a “warrior” staying in there and finally busting open Nicco’s nose as well. Roxanne then got taken down after Nicco was able to catch a high kick. As she did in every round Modafferi came out strong but once again Nicco was able to take the fight to the mat a couple of times. Roxanne had one real opportunity to steal it with an armbar again but just couldn’t maintain it. With that it was a clean sweep unanimous decision for the 14th seeded Nicco. But with a division that is going to be stacked to the gills with girls moving from 115 and 135 there will be little rest time for the newest UFC Champion.

Young star SEAN O’MALLEY also picked up a huge unanimous decision; over TERRION WARE.   LAUREN MURPHY edged BARB HONCHAK via split decision. GERALD MEERSCHAERT  TKO’d ERIC SPICELY from a body kick at 2:18 of the second round. DEANNA BENNETT won by majority draw over MELINDA FABIAN. 30 seconds into their fight BRETT JOHNS got JOE SOTO  to tap to the second ever calf slicer. While 2 minutes into their fight; CHRISTINA MARKS tapped to    MONTANA DE LA ROSA‘s armbar. RYAN JANES TKO’d ANDREW SANCHEZ 58 seconds into round 3. RACHEL OSTOVICH was able to get KARINE GEVORGYAN at 1:40 of round 1 to tap to an armbar. SHANA DOBSON at 2:53 into round 2 TKO’d ARIEL BECK from punches. GILLIAN ROBERTSON was able to get EMILY WHITMIRE to tap to an armbar 2:12 into their fight.
