NXT Takeover Phoenix Preview

Taking place the night before the Royal Rumble, NXT will be holding their NXT Takeover event live from Phoenix, just mere minutes away from Chase Field which will host the rumble event the night after.

The NXT brand has continued to shine as the calendar flipped to 2019, featuring even more stars and even more captivating story lines. As of this writing, there are five matches listed for the card.

Here’s your NXT Takeover Phoenix preview:

Matt Riddle vs. Kassius Ohno –

These two have had a rivalry dating back to November when Riddle surprised Ohno by beating him in under a minute at NXT Takeover War Games in Los Angeles. Riddle then defeated Ohno again a few weeks back but was the victim of a brutal post match assault by Ohno, igniting the flames to get this match set for Takeover Phoenix.

Riddle has been tremendous in the little bit of time he has been in NXT and he will probably be the NXT champion by the end of this year if not sooner.

As far as this match goes, Ohno may get the victory with cheating in some sort of fashion. Riddle can lose in that way and he would not lose a single ounce of credibility or momentum. Ohno could really use a big victory right about now, especially since he is viewed as enhancement talent by many in the WWE Universe. A jobber so to speak in NXT.

Going to go with Riddle winning via disqualification or Ohno winning due to cheating. This isn’t going to be a clean ending, bro.

Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Bianca Belair for the NXT Women’s title –

Shayna Baszler has been near untouchable the past few months ever since regaining her NXT women’s title from Kairi Sane. Her friends Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir by her side is giving her even more confidence than seen before. Baszler will face her biggest test yet in Bianca Belair.

Belair is currently undefeated so this brings a bit of a quandry to this match.

Does Baszler lose or does Belair lose?

It’s a rather tough call because Baszler losing means she may be headed to the main roster and may get involved in her friend Ronda Rousey’s business. If Belair loses, the streak goes away and there could be some risk in killing her momentum.

The best way for this match to be booked and believe it will be booked is to have Baszler win but in controversial fashion. Belair passing out via submission  but her foot is under the bottom rope and the referee does not see it. Therefore prompting a rematch possibly for NXT Takeover Brooklyn with a stipulation such as a no holds barred or something of the sort.

There’s no way this is a one and done and I do not see Baszler and company being thrown into Ronda’s business just yet.

Baszler retains.

Johnny Gargano vs. Ricochet (c) for the NXT North American championship –

Johnny Wrestling is looking to turn his failure 2018 campaign into a championship filled 2019.

It’s going to be a very tough road for Gargano as he must try and dethrone Ricochet, who has yet to taste defeat since becoming NXT North American Champion back in August.

What has to be considered here is the fact there really isn’t much else left for Gargano here in NXT. If he defeats Ricochet, who would he feud with? Keith Lee? Matt Riddle?

Gargano is main roster bound.

Ricochet retains.

War Raiders vs. Undisputed ERA (c) for the NXT Tag titles –

These teams have been feuding for the past six plus months and this should be the culmination of the feud.

The War Raiders should win the belts here as The Undisputed Era should be turning their attention on helping Adam Cole become NXT champion.

War Raiders become the new tag team champions.

Aleister Black vs. Tommaso Ciampa (c) for the NXT championship –

This Black vs. Ciampa showdown has been months in the making and is the perfect match to close NXT Takeover.

Ciampa’s title reign has been a very dominant one for a heel, as he has conquered every challenger to come his way.

Black seems as if he is ready for the main roster but it seems he has a lot of mileage left in NXT. Winning the title here and then having to fend off the likes of Adam Cole and maybe a rematch with Velveteen Dream seems like the direction this is going to go, but you never know.

NXT booking is always one step ahead of everybody so you just never know what will happen.

Black wins back the NXT title.
