It was the LIGHT and LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS taking the cage at PFL 5 on Long Island. After last minute changes to the card thanks to badly missed weight cuts there were only 8 fights on the card. With UFC lightweight champion KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV sitting cageside watching a plethora of his Dagestani teammates.

NATAN SCHULTE and JASON HIGH used to train together, on this night they closed the show. The pair seemed happy to kick each other early on. Natan was able to take Jason to the mat 4 times where he had the grappling advantage. The 4th he locked in a tight RNC as High went out cold with 42 seconds left in the 1st round. As he came to; he went after referee DAN MIRAGLIOTTA not knowing what was going on. VINNY MAGALHAES came out charging against BRANDON HALSEY. The pair then exchanged fire near the fence. Vinny threw a high kick, grazing the top of Halsey’s head, dropping him. He went down after him landing GNP with referee TODD ANDERSON stopping the fight just 94 seconds into it by TKO. With the king of smothering; Khabib watching; WILL BROOKS did just that to ROBERT WATLEY for 3 rounds picking up a unanimous decision win. Every time Watley wanted to start something offensive he was taken down. MAXIM GRISHIN got RAKIM CLEVELAND to tap out to a RNC 4:03 of the 2nd round. RASHID MAGOMEDOV and LUIZ FIRMINO peppered each other back and forth with Rashid doing more damage and picking up a unanimous decision win.

CHRIS WADE and YUKI KAWANA came literally flying out vs each other; with Chris just missing a flying front kick. As they landed on the mat; Wade locked in a D’Arce choke. That transitioned into a guillotine then a kimura. Once up on the feet again Yuki went for a takedown but Chris locked in an even tighter guillotine along the fence for the submission win 4:24 into the 1st round. DAN SPOHN is now on a 6 fight win streak but he left the cage not feeling like a winner. He and ARTUR ALIBULATOV chopped each others legs up with kicks. Artur changed the pace and would land some high ones too. Dan’s left hand was cocked, ready to fire. A combo by Dan backed Artur up to the fence ending the 1st round. In an exchange Dan was cut near his right eye. He moved away from a spinning back fist and scored a takedown. He worked his way to top control landing GNP and opening a cut on Artur. Alibulatov then landed a kick to the groin and was given a warning. Once the action started again he nailed Dan viciously in the groin again. He had a point taken away and the cageside doctor was brought in. She then waived the fight off. Because Dan at that time was ahead on all the cards he was declared the winner by unanimous decision. THIAGO TAVARES was easily in control for the 1st 2 rounds against ARTHUR ESTRAZULAS as the pair exchanged. Arthur came on strong midway through the 3rd feeling the pressure but it was too little too late. Thiago wound up holding on for a close split decision.

So the standings now are:

LIGHTWEIGHTS: 1-SCHULTE, 2-BROOKS, 3-MAMEDOV, 4-WADE, 5-WATLEY, 6-BRIAN FOSTER, 7-MAGOMEDOV, and 8 will either be TAVARES or RAMSEY NIJEM.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS: 1-MAGALHAES, 2-GRISHIN, 3-SPOHN, 4-O’CONNELL, 5-8 will be decided between: CLEVELAND, HALSEY, ATAEV, YUSUPOV, RAMA, MARKES, BUTCHER.
