Phillies Sign Andrew McCutchen to Three Year Deal

Another big free agent is off the board.

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed free agent outfielder Andrew McCutchen to a three-year deal worth approximately $50 million. The deal is pending a physical.

McCutchen, a former NL MVP in 2013, had a rough first half of 2018, hitting .255 with 15 home runs in 482 at-bats. He looked lost at the plate at times and couldn’t generate power. Part of that is the fact he played in San Francisco, but the other part is the fact he is getting older.

Being traded to the New York Yankees near the end of the season helped revive him a bit, seemingly helping him find the strike zone better and compile a .421 OBP in 114 plate appearances. He also hit five home runs during his tenure with the Yankees.

It’s possible that being in a hitters ballpark such as Philly can help him as his career winds down little by little, but don’t expect MVP type numbers from him ever again. Those days are gone. He at least will bring a much needed veteran presence to the club, which is ever so valuable on a team that is as young as the Phillies are.

Prediction 2019 season line for McCutchen: .262 AVG 22 HR 75 RBI 8 SB .367 OBP
