Preakness Weekend Selections – Pimlico Race Course

The 2nd race of the Triple Crown takes place this Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Always Dreaming dominated the Kentucky Derby and leads a field of 10 in the $1.5M Preakness Stakes as the 4/5 favorite. I anticipate this race to be a bit different with the smaller field and shorter distance. While I believe Always Dreaming is the best horse in the field, his odds will be far too short, and there will be plenty of value with other selections.

Only five of the 20 Derby horses have come back for the Preakness. Looking at Lee who was an energetic 2nd just 2 ¾ lengths behind the winner is back along with the 4th place finisher Classic Empire. Gunnevera who finished 7th is back with Mike Smith on board and the 11th place finisher Hence will also give it another shot. We have 5 newcomers led by the 12/1 Cloud Computing ridden by Javier Castellano and trained by Chad Brown. The next choice at 15/1 is Conquest Mo Money trained by Miguel Hernandez and ridden by Jorge Carreno. The other three newcomers are all 30/1 longshots and include Multiplier ridden by Joel Rosario, Term of Art ridden by Jose Ortiz, and Senior Investment ridden by Channing Hill.

I think this is three horse race, and I would take 4-5-6 (Always Dreaming – Classic Empire – Gunnevera) as my order of finish. This could actually be a boring race much like the Derby depending on the pace. Unfortunately, that trifecta will pay very little, and while I will play it for a decent amount, I will also try to get something meatier in case Always Dreaming is not up to the challenge. I always like to play ALL-ALL in the exacta which will be $90 this time around. I will also take a couple of shots on exactas and trifectas leaving out Always Dreaming and adding Hence and Looking at Lee. Finally, I will add Cloud Computing and Conquest Mo Money in some very long shot exotics.

In addition to the Preakness stakes, which is the 13th race on the 14 race card Saturday, with a 6:48pm post time, there are 14 other stakes races including the $250K Black-Eyed Susan for the ladies on Friday’s card. Another wager I like to go ALL-ALL on includes the Black-Eyed Susan/Preakness Stakes double which will cost $110. Below I give all of my selections for the 15 stakes races. I look to be about$4K deep between the 2 days of racing.  Good Luck if you are playing!
