The NBA summer of 2018 has been one of the most wild and unpredictable ever. It was supposed to be the summer of LeBron given his free agency takes precedence over any professional athlete in America. There was much attention to his move to the Los Angeles Lakers but there were still significant moves including the end of the strange Kawhi Leonard saga in San Antonio and the unbelievable free agent move of NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins to the Golden State Warriors. There appears to be another potential major move that is imminent involving another NBA All-Star as Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler has let the team know that he would like to be traded. There were rumors of friction between Butler and the Timberwolves’ young building blocks Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins and those rumors appear to be true given the social media situation that blew up over the last month. Butler has mentioned that there are three teams that he would prefer to be traded to: the Brooklyn Nets, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the New York Knicks. Here is a ranking of the NBA team fits, starting with the worst to the best, for Butler based on the personnel on each team.

3. New York Knicks

The Knicks will not trade building block Kristaps Porzingis or 2018 first round pick Kevin Knox for Butler. Those guys are viewed as the future of the Knicks. The franchise is in rebuilding mode especially given the severity of Porzingis’ knee injury. New York could offer up Courtney Lee for veteran assistance now for the Timberwolves and guard Frank Ntilikina and 2018 second round pick Mitchell Robinson as raw, young prospects that can grow with Towns and Wiggins. Butler would be a weird fit in New York with a guy like Tim Hardaway Jr., who is neither young or old but is decent and the Knicks are a strange fit for Butler given he has clashed with young players in both Chicago and Minnesota.

2. Brooklyn Nets

This might be surprising to Knicks fans but in Brooklyn, Jimmy Butler would clearly be the top guy on the team even with the emergence of Spencer Dinwiddie. The Nets could trade Allen Crabbe as an offensive specialist to help the Timberwolves stretch the court and intriguing young wing Dzanan Musa to Minnesota for Butler. The Nets with Butler and Dinwiddie and up and coming center Jarrett Allen could contend for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference this upcoming season while stealing some thunder from the rival New York Knicks.

1. Los Angeles Clippers

The best fit for Jimmy Butler among his three preferred destinations is the Clippers. They currently have a veteran team sprinkled with a couple of young prospects but is missing an impact player in the post Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan era. Butler would provide that. Acquiring veteran Tobias Harris and 2018 first round pick Jerome Robinson should be enough for Minnesota to get Butler. A head coach like Doc Rivers and players like Lou Williams and Patrick Beverley are sure to have the respect of Jimmy Butler and would give the Clippers their own quality acquisition.
