Ryan Hilinski Commits To South Carolina

Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks wrapped up their Spring season with a whopping 614 yards of offense under the direction of newest offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon while starting quarterback Jake Bentley threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns and looked pretty good. Bentley is an upcoming junior and if he were to have a breakthrough and leave a year early, they are said to have the quarterback of the future for the 2019 season. He is the younger brother of another QB who recently passed away.

Ryan Hilinski committed to South Carolina on Wednesday. An Orange, California native, also received offers from Arizona and Arizona State including his late brother Tyler’s alma mater Washington State. Tyler Hilinski committed suicide in January and played in 10 career games for the Cougars under Mike Leach, throwing for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. The day before his committment, Ryan spread his brother ashes in Hawaii on Tuesday and said he had a good feeling of going to Columbia.

In two seasons for Orange Lutheran High School, Hilinski has thrown for 5,331 yards and 45 touchdowns and led the Lancers to a 6-6 record in 2017, guiding them to the second round of the state playoffs. Ryan is listed as a 2019 pro-style quarterback and is ranked eighth overall according to 247sports.com. Hilinski so far is the highest ranked pro-style quarterback in the SEC and appears to be the only future SEC player in the top 50 in that category. He is the only 2019 QB among nine committments overall.

If Bentley were to leave early, Hilinski would possibly compete with five other quarterbacks on the roster if they stay on the team for one more season. The two players most likely to compete with Ryan in 2019 are Drew Dinsmore and Dakereon Joyner as they were mentioned by Muschamp as the next quarterback who need room for improvement.
