Although the SEC coaching carousel has finally stopped spinning, the new head coaches of their respective teams still have to fill out their spots for assistants. In some cases, they pick up coaches from other teams or just to save the trouble and bring their entire staff. Of course most staffs will most likely be filled by the end of the year and be prepared by the Spring. At the moment, there are three more spots that have been filled and here is what transpired on December 8.

Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead named former Tennessee defensive coordinator Bob Shoop to the same position. Even with a 4-8 record during the turmoil that ensued along with Butch Jones’ firing, the Volunteers were ranked second in the SEC in total tackles and third in assists. The Bulldogs were ranked dead last in solo tackles and could use the extreme improvement in that category, but were second in assists. Shoop’s schemes could improve the Bulldog defense.

Barry Odom has promoted safeties coach Ryan Walters to defensive coordinator replacing DeMontie Cross who was fired early in the season at Missouri. During the Tigers’ six game winning streak, they kept teams under 21 points and was tied for third in the SEC in interceptions. Missouri was tied with Alabama for the fourth most sacks in the SEC with 31. The overhaul of playbooks on both sides have helped Missouri and with Walters moving up could help improve from their early 1-5 start.

Jimbo Fisher isn’t wasting a lot of time putting together his staff at Texas A&M as he has already named Georgia WR coach James Coley offensive coordinator. Fisher has picked up two of his assistants from Florida State, running backs coach Jay Graham along with new quality control coach Dameyune Craig, who also played quarterback at Auburn. This will be the third time that Craig will work in the SEC.
