Since 2011, NFL Network has broadcast a list of the Top 100 NFL Players for a particular season. It is a list that has always been controversial for various reasons. The list has always claimed to be “voted on by the players themselves”. Because of that claim, there is always debate on where players are placed even by NFL players themselves. Earlier this year, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was called this year’s list a “joke” because he was ranked 35th after playing only three games in 2016. There were some definite hits and misses now that the entire NFL Top 100 Players of 2017 has been revealed.

Among the hits of the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2017 was that talented pass rushers Von Miller of the Denver Broncos and Khalil Mack of the Oakland Raiders were both ranked in the top 10. Mack ended up winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award by just one vote over Miller but both are game changers worthy of being in the top 10 of players regardless of position. Another hit of the NFL’s Top 100 was the inclusion of New York Giants safety Landon Collins. Collins was third in the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year voting behind Von Miller and Khalil Mack. Other safeties on the NFL’s Top 100 list like Eric Berry and Earl Thomas have more name recognition, but it is nice that a talented young safety like Collins get deserved credit. Of course, the biggest hit of the NFL’s Top 100 is that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was ranked number one. He had an another excellent regular season while capping it with leading his team to the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.

One of the biggest misses of the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2017 was the inclusion of New Orleans Saints running back Adrian Peterson on the list at number 98. It’s not surprising that Peterson made the list considering he was a perennial top 10 player on the list for several years. However, Peterson is coming off a year when he played only three games due to injury and he is now 32 years old, which has historically been a challenging age for running backs. Another big miss of the NFL’s Top 100 was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott being rated more highly than several notable quarterbacks. It is completely understandable that Prescott would end up in the NFL’s top 100 after winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. It is not understandable that Prescott, who was ranked 14th, would be rated more highly than several quarterbacks including Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, and Russell Wilson. A huge miss of the NFL’s Top 100 both literally and figuratively was the absence of Los Angeles Rams offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth. Offensive linemen are often underrated on the NFL’s Top 100 Players list every year but there is no excuse why Whitworth is not on the list. He has made the Pro Bowl the last two NFL seasons and his great play led to him getting a nice contract to join the Rams after being a mainstay for the Cincinnati Bengals for many seasons.
