THE DIAMOND SHINES BRIGHT IN VIRGINIA

If you happened to fall asleep early last night you missed quite a card from Norfolk Virginia. That’s where UFC Fight Night 120 went down. In an incredibly important lightweight fight DUSTIN “THE DIAMOND” POIRIER faced ANTHONY “SHOWTIME” PETTIS. Dustin kept pressuring Pettis throughout; especially up against the cage and landed some great takedowns. Anthony missed with a flying knee and failed to lock in a kimura. Dustin countered a high kick with a hard right hand. While both had their moments in top control scoring with devastating GNP; Poirier did more damage. At range Pettis wasn’t as good as usual, and Dustin sliced open Showtime’s face with precision elbows. Eventually REFEREE KEITH PETERSON called for the doctor to come in and check all the blood around Anthony’s eye. While Dustin had a body lock on Pettis turned and appeared to seriously injure his ribs and immediately tapped at 2:08 into round 3; securing a TKO win for Dustin. He then walked towards matchmaker SEAN SHELBY and said he wants the GAETHJE-ALVAREZ winner; then to go for the title.

“THE IMMORTAL” MATT BROWN had led everyone to believe this would be his last fight. After he said he needs to spend the holidays with the family to talk things over. That’s because his win over  DIEGO SANCHEZ was so dominant. Matt came into this fight 1-5 in his last 6. Brown was successful in defending Diego’s takedowns. Sanchez went for a high left kick that Brown caught and backed him into the fence. He then cracked him with a monstrous right elbow at 3:44 of the 1st round that KO’d him right there. Diego now has to be thinking long term as well. He’s lost 3 of 4 all by serious KO. Matt wound up passing another Matt…. HUGHES; for most welterweight wins in the UFC. JUNIOR “BABY”ALBINI had an impressive debut on LI this summer and was stepping up in opponent against   ANDREI ARLVOSKI; despite him being on a 5 fight losing streak. The 26 year old Albini seemed to gas out early and be off his game. It cost him his 10 fight win streak, as Arlovski book ended that losing streak with unanimous decisions (the other coming at UFC 191 vs Frank Mir). It also puts him 1 win away from Mir’s record of most heavyweight wins in the UFC.

After CEZAR FERREIRA put NATE MARQUARDT on a 3 fight losing streak thanks to a split decision he called out rocketing  young superstar, PAULO BORRACHINHA aka THE ERASER.   RAPHAEL ASSUNCAO wound up being in a catchweight fight due to MATTHEW LOPEZ missing weight. Assuncao got the better of the early exchanges and his leg kicks were totally on point. Lopez managed to get out of the way of a flying knee but got caught by a solid right that dropped him. The KO came at 1:50 of round 3. In his last fight on his present contract (which was his 25th fight) CLAY GUIDA; picked up his 1st finish in 7 years. He got the TKO 67 seconds into the fight vs JOE LAUZON. Clay assaulted him from different levels and angles. He rocked Joe with a right then put him down with an upper hook and jumped on him with hammer fists to close the deal. Clay then said he wanted to meet with DANA to discuss a new contract. MARLON MORAES lost his UFC debut by split decision to Assuncao; in his 2nd UFC fight he won by split. This one vs the hard to beat JOHN DODSON. He then said he’d like to take on fellow NY area resident JIMMIE RIVERA. TATIANA SUAREZ dominated and was relentless vs VIVIANE PEREIRA in picking up a unanimous decision win.

The newest TEAM ALPHA MALE; “SUPER” SAGE NORTHCUTT returned to lightweight after a try at welterweight. He also just auditioned to play IVAN DRAGO’s son in the next CREED film. Sage spent 3 rounds tearing through MICHAEL QUINONES picking up a unanimous decision. NINA ANSAROFF did the same to ANGELA HILL although their fight was more competitive with both going at a fast pace. SEAN STRICKLAND and COURT MCGEE was originally announced a majority draw only to later be called a unanimous decision for Sean after an error was found on 1 of the scorecards. JAKE COLLIER won via unanimous decision also; beating MARCEL FORTUNA DARREN STEWART tapped to a RNC from KARL ROBERSON 3:41 into their fight.
