Troy Tulowitzki Signs With The Yankees

Troy Tulowitzki is on record as to saying Derek Jeter was his boyhood idol. He even wore number two in honor of the Yankee captain.

He now gets to don the pinstripes in 2019 as a member of the New York Yankees.

Tulowitzki will attempt to revitalize his MLB career after a few injury plagued seasons derailed what could have been. Tulo had been a monster in Colorado when on the field, bringing power as well as great fielding to the shortstop position. He was one of the best young hitters in the game and had helped bring the Colorado Rockies to the World Series in 2007.

Once he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle of 2015, it was as if he fell of a cliff. His first full season with the Jays in 2016 was pretty bad. Even with staying relatively healthy and only missing 31 games, he hit a mediocre .254 and hit 24 home runs, while his walk ratio dipped and his strikeouts soared over 100. The year before he did strike out over 100 times, but that was between both Colorado and Toronto. His strikeout rate in Toronto was 22.9% in the 183 plate appearances with the Jays in ’15. That should have been a sign of things to come.

His 2017 was injury ravaged and he didn’t even play in 2018.

The Yankees are taking a minimal chance here, as Didi Gregorius will miss most of ’19 if not all due to Tommy John surgery. The Yanks will also be on the hook for the league minimum salary here, as the Blue Jays will pay the rest of the $20 million owed to Tulo. Little risk, high potential reward for the Yankees, who are also looking to sign Manny Machado within the next week.

What does that mean for Miguel Andujar? It may mean nothing as Tulo could be an off the bench option. Or, Andujar will be heading to a team such as Cleveland for some pitching help.

Only two days into the new year and already some sparks are lighting.

Spring training is less than two months away, by the way. Bring on the warmth!
