Vols Name Jarrett Guarantano Starter Against South Carolina

After a 3-2 record and several key issues within the Volunteer nation, a change was imminent and hard to avoid under center. Since surviving Georgia Tech in OT, losing at Florida on a Hail Mary and completely shut down by Georgia at home, Butch Jones must have felt during the bye week that a change had to be made, mostly on offense. Quinten Dormady has now been benched in favor of freshman Jarrett Guarantano when they host South Carolina on Saturday.

The junior started all five games throwing for 925 yards and six touchdowns with six interceptions to go along with it. Dormady’s best game by far was their loss at Florida throwing for 259 yards, but his production started to go downhill against UMass and was held to just 64 yards against Georgia at home. Dormady was more of a pro-style quarterback far different from Joshua Dobbs, and the change in style must have played a huge factor in their 2017 campaign.

Even while at practice on Tuesday, there were reports that Dormady was contemplating his future in Knoxville but so far as of now he is still on the roster. Guarantano has come in relief in three games completing 12 passes for 54 yards and a touchdown and shows the ability of a dual-threat quarterback. Dobbs was a dual-threat throughout his time at Tennessee and is most likely what the offense has been missing. But the change in quarterback wasn’t the only issue during the bye week.

Jones suspended defensive lineman Darrell Taylor indefinitely after he was involved in a fight with offensive lineman Trey Smith during practice last Thursday. Taylor was already supposed to be suspended for the first half against the Gamecocks after being ejected for fighting during the Georgia game. Taylor is ninth on the team in total tackles with 20 with only one sack.
