WHO’S UNDEFEATED ROULETTE WHEEL LASTS LONGER

There are presently nine;….. make that ten high level undefeated fighters in the UFC. Actually; there’s a little more than that but let’s work on the 9 plus soon-to-be-official BEN ASKREN.

For seven straight times 25 year old TAI TUIVASA never saw a second round. That was until he went to the judge’s scorecards vs ANDREI ARLOVSKI. No controversies there; clean sweep unanimous decision win. On December 1st he takes on JUNIOR DOS SANTOS in Tai’s home of Australia. It’s young lion vs old lion here; and senior lion may have a trick or two left up his sleeve. Even if Tuivasa went to 9-0 those at the top of the heavyweight division could paste a “L” on him VERY SOON. The one year younger; SEAN O’MALLEY is presently not only injured; but suspended. Plus when he starts to face ranked bantamweights; his “oh” may go; quickly. After losing in his only amateur fight (which doesn’t count here); Nigerian ISRAEL ADESANYA has been rolling through people. He’s had a dozen straight KOs and TKOs until he picked up back-to-back decision wins in his last two. Next he faces DEREK BRUNSON at MSG next weekend. While that should be a win to go to 15-0; he may continue to roll aces. The top of the middleweight division is mostly old guard holding their spots. Israel may be an undefeated challenger for a title by the end of 2019. That is unless fellow middleweight, also undefeated god-like specimen; PAULO COSTA beats him (in a fight and to the punch). The powerful Brazilian started his career 9 straight 1st round finishes. He’s gone to the 2nd round 3 times in a row now just to get extra cage time. With Whittaker soon to lock up with Kelvin Gastelum it’s an almost safe bet Israel’s “0” will face Paulo’s “0” in a title eliminator bout.

As a pro; ASPEN LADD has won all 7 of her fights; despite having issues cutting to 135. Perhaps the 23 year old will soon move up and become a 145er. Between Pena, Rocky, Vieira, Holm, and Amanda; it would be really tough to see her staying undefeated a lot longer. TATIANA SUAREZ‘s 7 wins come in a diverse manner. She solid on the ground and on the feet. However the 4th ranked strawweight will be going into the deep waters soon. She may impress there, but her streak may not last too much longer. She has to go through the obstacle course of Gadelha, Andrade, ?JJ?, and Rose; to win the strap. The former IT worker; DOMINICK REYES and his 10 fight win streak should be in tact for a while. Although a wrestler like Ilir Latifi may give him problems, plus who knows if Jon Jones doesn’t move up to heavyweight. Lucky for him; he and Daniel Cormier are like 2 ships passing each other at night. Or as grandma used to say “the twain shall never meet”. “T-CITY” BRIAN ORTEGA has gotten better and flashier with age. Under Renner Gracie’s tutelage the 14-0 1 NC fighter is on the verge of winning the featherweight belt. But a move upwards may be in his future too.

That leaves us with two. The 2 most interesting characters on this impressive list. First; the lightweight champion; KHABIB NURMAGOMEDOV at 27-0. And the is he or isn’t he officially in the UFC yet;  BEN ASKREN at 18-0 1NC. Both could be headed for a battle against each other. Both may face the tough, skilled, dangerous Tony Ferguson. Ben probably won’t face the welterweight champ presently, because him and Tyron are very close. Khabib is the hunted as champ. As such Tony, Conor and Iaquinta again, Kevin Lee, have put a target on his back. Odds say eventually someone will always just be a millimeter off thus being defeated. At this point Ben is gunning for legacy. He doesn’t necessarily “need”  a title. The competition lined up ready for him can probably hand him a defeat or two.

That leaves it as Khabib to most likely be able to stay undefeated the longest. Mind you the crystal ball is only right 50% of the time. But this seems like a really safe bet. Especially since the one thing Nurmagomedov has over everyone else; undefeated or challenger; is this relentless desire and work ethic. That comes from his upbringing and his soul. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see who’s “0” doesn’t go.
