WOULD THERE EVER BE A “TRADE” IN MMA?

All the major sports have the ability to make trades to improve themselves. Heck even the WWE “works” trades at times. Obviously the difference is MMA is an individual sport. Free agency has become the  effective way for the most part making fighters happy. But if mid-way through a contract an organization grows tired of a fighter, or a fighter is disgruntled by an organizational direction; why not? Sure; said fighter could be released and then just sign with another company. That’s a scenario that happens a lot. Yes; I get it; there’s a hundred reasons why it doesn’t happen. However; this could just bring a whole new layer to the sport that’s still in its infancy and may spark some new excitement.

For arguments sake lets take the big two for a moment; the UFC and BELLATOR. Now that entertainment companies; WME/IMG owns the UFC and VIACOM owns BELLATOR there’s a working relationship there. While business practices and personalities are polar opposites Presidents DANA WHITE  and  SCOTT COKER are cordial in speaking of the other. So it wouldn’t be that awkward to have conversations. Just think Dana calling Scott asking, “what would you gimme for a package of Yair Rodriguez, Mark Hunt, and Cyborg”. Or even if CHATRI SITYODTONG from ONE FC called Dana and said, “hey Jing Nan Xiong and Eduard Folayang are available”.

It could just be another tool to keep fighters in line, to make weight, etc. If a major companies fighter becomes a real head case; ship them off to the regional circuit. A fighter misses weight twice; send them to the other side of the globe. Don’t want to accept fights we offer; ok; now go fight in the middle of nowhere. Of course this would mean more work for fighters managers/agents in trying to get “no trade clauses” in contracts.

Just something to think about before the fireworks of another crazy summer start going off.
