The American League playoff race is one that may come down to the final days.

There are six teams fighting for five spots, with only the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox appearing as locks for October baseball. The New York Yankees, Oakland A’s, Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros are fighting for the remaining three spots and there is no clear cut favorite here.

Each one of these four teams are dealing with big time injuries to their lineups and rotations. Houston has lost Charlie Morton and Lance McCullers in August. The Mariners are down James Paxton for who knows how long. The A’s lost both Brett Anderson and Sean Manaea in less than a week, putting their surprising playoff run in very bad shape. The Yankees have been down Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez for weeks.

For the Yankees, however, help is on the way.

Andrew McCutchen in a very surprising move is on his way to New York for two prospects, none considered to be future stars.

McCutchen after a bounce back season in 2017 was traded this past offseason to San Francisco and has not performed up to par this season.

In 482 at-bats the former All-Star is hitting just .255 with 15 home runs and 55 RBI’s in 2018, though he has 13 stolen bases this year, up from 11 in 2017.

The Yankees are hoping a change of scenery can get the former star to recapture his 2012-2015 form. If there’s any place he can do it, it would be in New York.
